Zanzibar, the name itself is magic. A tropical palm fringed island, lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, with magical sandy beaches. The Spice Island of legend, with its historic capital city Stone Town, where the labyrinthine streets are a rich bazaar of people selling anything from exotic fruit and vegetables to fish to art and craft work. A beautiful place either to laze on a beach after a strenuous Kilimanjaro climb, or to dive in the clear waters, swim with dolphins, trek in the beautiful Jozani Forest , or visit the historic buildings in Stone Town or on one of the neighbouring islands.

Zanzibar Island is about 85kms long and between 20km and 30 km wide, it is a low lying island with long sandy beaches and coral reefs just offshore. In the North there are rocky inlets and some of the coast is bordered by lagoons and mangrove swamps. Dotted around the island are smaller islands such as Changuu (Prison) Island, home to a colony of Aldabra Giant Tortoises, and historic buildings originally built as a prison for disobedient slaves and used later by the British colonial powers as a quarantine station, now it also houses a luxury hotel and restaurant., Snake Island where thousands of Egrets roost at night, Chapwani (Grave) island, the site of an historic cemetery where there are many graves of British sailors who died fighting the Arab slave traders in the Nineteenth Century, Chumbe Island, a nature reserve, where snorkelling is as good as anywhere in the world.
